The ATA Chair, Mark Parry, called for a new approach to truck driver licensing in Australia to enhance safety and attract more individuals to the industry. He emphasised the inadequacy of current licensing arrangements and proposed changes such as rigorous assessment of driver trainers, minimum behind the wheel training times, and advancement through license classes based on driving hours instead of just time.
Parry also recommended splitting the MC class into two to reflect varying skills needed for different types of trucks. He highlighted the importance of including driver medicals in the licensing process and strengthening training to ensure drivers have necessary safety skills.
The goal is to make the licensing system more conducive to attracting individuals with a safety-first attitude to the truck driving industry.
